Should you choose a 20mm worktop? The benefits of a thinner worktop.
If you’re looking for a new kitchen worktop you may be surprised to see lots of 20mm worktops around. 20mm worktops match our modern desire for slick designs that take up less space. There’s no doubt that 20mm designs look beautiful but how practical are they?
Let’s uncover the reasons why 20mm worktops have become so popular and how advisable it is to get one.
What is a 20mm worktop?
Until recently, 30mm was the standard depth for a kitchen worktop. However new materials, manufacturing processes and contemporary kitchen design trends mean a thinner kitchen worktop is the preference for many homeowners.
The modern trend for sleek trim kitchens means a thinner worktop fits well with a contemporary aesthetic. The most common type of 20mm worktop is a quartz worktop. The reason for this is that quartz kitchen worktops are super strong and formed from natural quartz crystals through manufacturing processes. The manufacturing approaches used to make 20mm quartz kitchen worktops involves natural quartz crystals being crushed, mixed with polymer resins which act like glue, then the mixture is compressed under intense pressure to form a new, highly practical material.

Benefits of a 20mm worktop
Still strong: Strength is an essential quality for a kitchen worktop and one of the first questions people have when considering a 20mm countertop is will it be strong enough? As compression is used to form a quartz countertop, a 20mm quartz worktop will still be strong.
Cheaper: With less material needed to form a 20mm worktop, a 20mm quartz kitchen worktop is easier to transport, manoeuvre and produce. Those savings are passed on to you, the customer, meaning a 20mm quartz worktop is cheaper to buy than a 30mm worktop.
Versatile: Our preference for open plan living spaces and larger kitchens means our kitchen worktops are longer than ever. With a 20mm countertop, you can easily fit a continuous surface along a space because the countertop will be able to fit under features that stick out such as a window sill.
Highlights kitchen cabinets: If you’re planning to have a kitchen with a contemporary minimal look your kitchen cabinets are a big feature.
20mm Quartz and Granite Worktops
Whether you have statement cabinets, are incorporating cabinets with thinner doors or are planning to use handle less doors for a streamlined finish, a 20mm quartz kitchen countertop may fit better with your overall look
However, if you’re planning to install a granite worktop, it’s worth bearing in mind that 20mm is not suitable for every type of granite countertop because granite worktops are formed directly from a slab of natural granite stone.

While some granite slabs can’t be 20mm thick due to strength concerns, many types still offer 20mm granite worktops. Unlike quartz, not all granite countertops can be 20mm thick, but many can be shaped accordingly.
