What is Carrara marble and why choose a Carrara worktop?
If you want a luxurious worktop for your kitchen, a marble worktop will have been the first thing that came to mind. The material of choice for so many of the world’s most lavish buildings, marble is a substance that sings of opulence.
From the Taj Mahal to Rome’s Ancient Pantheon and the US Supreme Court, dazzling marble is the epitome of natural beauty and it comes with a price tag to match.
For the best marble in the world at a slightly lower price range, a Carrara worktop will perfectly suit what you have in mind. It’s one of the most sumptuous, beautiful types of marble you’ll find anywhere in the world.
Let’s uncover what Carrara marble is and why a Carrara marble worktop is a top choice for many.
What is Carrara marble?
Carrara marble is found in the Apuan Mountains of Carrara in Tuscany. It’s quarried alongside Calacatta marble. Together, these two Italian marbles constitute the finest marble in the world.
The difference between the two lies in their scarcity and appearance.
Carrara marble can be found in a few sites in the mountains whereas Calacatta can only be sourced from one. That means Calacatta is rarer than Carrara and so it trades at a higher price although both marbles are extremely expensive.
Carrera is distinguished by its delicately feathered veining and slightly blue-grey tinge. It’s an extremely popular marble with a history that’s seen it used by Michelangelo for many of his famous sculptures, including his world-renowned David sculpture, for the Pantheon, London’s Marble Arch and many other iconic buildings.
Today, Carrara is still used in all sorts of luxury homes and structures around the world. But what about its use as a kitchen worktop?
How to choose a Carrara worktop?
Despite its beauty, a Carrara marble worktop won’t bring you much joy. A Carrara worktop suffers from the same limitations as other types of marble worktops. Sadly, Carrera’s luxurious look doesn’t make it hardwearing.
A Carrara marble worktop will stain, scratch and damage easily so it’s not a practical option for the kitchen. Marble is a porous stone that absorbs spills and responds badly to any type of abrasion as well as acids, alkalines and chemical substances. High sensitivity means everything from lemons to cleaning products will spell disaster for your Carrera worktop.
But it’s not all bad news. Carrara quartz worktops are manufactured from natural quartz crystals to do everything Carrara marble can’t. A Carrara quartz worktop even looks identical to Carrara marble. In fact, the aesthetic is so realistic that even experts find it hard to tell the difference.
A Carrera quartz worktop will deliver all the high resistance you need to protect against spills, scratches and heat. It’s manufactured to be extremely robust with a superior aesthetic that’s prized amongst those who adore natural marble.
Carrara quartz countertops come in a huge range of styles and colours providing you with far more choice than you would have with natural Carrera marble. Additionally, quartz worktops are superior countertops prized by homeowners so you’ll still have a luxurious worktop with a high-end finish.
For a Carrara marble countertop that’s easy to maintain and guaranteed to endure, a Carrera quartz worktop will deliver all you need and more.
